DrupalCamp NYC 3 @ Polytechnic University
Submitted by noneck on 14 June, 2007 - 18:34
my dear Drupalistas,
every day the sun peaks up just a tad bit earlier for you to code. the birds sing in delightful syntax. the temperatures rise giving you another excuse to keep the air conditioner on and to stay inside. these are just a few good reasons, to break out of your shell and once again join fellow drupalistas at Polytechnic University for DRUPALCAMP NYC 3
when :: saturday and sunday, july 14 - 15, 2007
what is drupalcamp?
modeled in the *camp unconference structure, drupalcamp is a no-holds-bars discussion, workshop/code-a-thon involving the open source content management system Drupal. at drupalcamp you ask the questions and the experts provide the answers. at drupalcamp you discover your solutions to your most pressing problems. like previous drupalcamps, there will be a number of break out rooms...
- Beginners Room: Several advanced Drupal Ninja's will take shifts in this room covering the basics of Drupal and its various systems.
- Sessions 1: Room available for user generated sessions - throughout the day we will cover intermediate concepts of Drupal and Howtos - Propose a session, anyone can teach!
- Sessions 2: Room available for user generated sessions - throughout the day we will cover intermediate concepts of Drupal and Howtos - Propose a session, anyone can teach!
- Advanced Room: This is where the ninjas hang out. they might write a module for drupal or hold a patch marathon. sometimes you can walk in and find them drunk on the drupal and Redbull.
where is drupalcamp?
Polytechnic University Brooklyn Campus - Building A
Six Metrotech Center, Brooklyn, NY 11201 Subway Map
what can you talk about at drupalcamp?
you can talk about anything related to drupal. from business practices to code, all is welcome. if you have a topic to discuss, a problem to pose or a session to present, check out the sessions / schedule page on the wiki and then register to attend. (pwd c4mp)
how do i register?
it's super simple! unlike most conferences, this conference is FREE, as in beer. just visit the register page and add your name to the list. please be mindful that there is a limitation to 100 attendants and the organizers take every name to heart. if you can not make it or you are passively thinking attending, please make that known. (pwd c4mp)
on a personal note, this is the first drupalcamp i will not participate as an organizer. while it does make me sad, it's been wonderful to see the new york city drupal community mature from a rag-tag group of disparate coders to a cohesive structure. many kudos to jacob redding for the monthly meetups, hans-christoph steiner for being a tireless soul in coordinating access at poly, good luck to the ingenious michael mandiberg.

my buddies at Assignment Zero are inquiring about "unconferences." DrupalCamp, Barcamp, PodCamp, Social Media Club, RootsCamp, FOOCamp, and Penguin Day are just a few of the examples they list. personally, i can attest to the value of peer to peer knowedge sharing, and "unconferences" are just the beginning. take a few minutes and tell Assignment Zero your opinion of unconferences and it's variants.
this article is cross posted on the barcamp blog.

it's been a very long road. two years ago, this site started off as a civicspace distribution of drupal. it was my first foray into the reverberations of the 2004 presidential election. collectively, our paths have grown, and the past two years have brought out quite a bit of change.
This weekend, Civicspace on Demand (CSoD) launched. For $50 bucks a month you get a "complete, integrated solution for your community website, online donations, blast email, and supporter database needs." If you thought Drupal and CiviCRM were too complicated, think again. CSoD has spent the past two years, rethinking the layout and workflow. Instead of harvesting the open-source community, they have spent a considerable about of time providing feedback and improvements to the community.
For the next 30-days, you get a complete community solution featuring the following bells and whistles! Grab the PDF.
Complete Online Fundraising
- Accept credit cards (through Paypal)
- Unlimited custom donation pages
- Process membership dues
Sophisticated Email Marketing
- Track opens, click throughs and bounces
- Email merge letters
- Automated communication preferences and subscription management
- Advanced list segmentation
World-class Community Website (Drupal)
- WYSIWYG HTML editor
- Community features like blogs and forums
- Advanced content management (CCK, views, panels)
- And much more
Constituent Relationship Management Database (CiviCRM)
- Unified view of constituents
- Membership management/ dues
- Smart groups based on saved searches

This weekend couldn't have been possible without your input and most importantly - your attendance. A bunch of us have dumped photos to flickr. If you took pictures, don't forget to upload and tag them with IDMI, DrupalCamp and DrupalCampNYC2. If you have any video or podcasts, please tag them and add a link to the post-mortum page.
Speaking of which, we are making plans for the next camp, and we need your feedback - worked and what didn't. If you have any summary blog posts or comments, please add them to the post-mortum page.
Also, next week, (Tues, 30 Jan) MNN will host the monthly NYC Drupal meeting. From 7 - 9, on west 59th street, we will meet to discuss the next steps. Check out the NYC Drupal Group.
For those of you who are stepping into the programming side of Drupal check out the dojo.
Finally, this weekend could not have been possible with out our generous sponsors. Thank you so much! By the way, if you are looking for a success story from DrupalCamp, check out Open Planner's story. Last summer, Andrew and his partners had just started working with Drupal and needed a guiding hand. Eight months later, OpenPlanner.org is a thriving online community integrating the ideals of open-source into education and curriculum.

i really don't know what i would be doing without my home boys at advomatic.
late in the afternoon at drupalcamp nyc, aaron welch sat down and helped me convert my theme from xtemplate to phptemplate, and walked me through the arduous process of cleaning out all the old modules i had installed back when this site used civicspace. finally, i can enable comments and use an external blogging engine!
woot! i'm happy as a clam...

unlike last time, this year we will have a true camp atmosphere where YOU provide the sessions and content. we will also have one room dedicated to coding, one to new drupal users, and one for intermediaries who want to hold conversations, code or skill-share. do not fear, we will have ample space for many break-out sessions. the whole area is blanketed with wifi, and almost all rooms feature projectors.
we've received a few session proposals, and if you've been working on one, post it to the wiki. if you are new or just want to learn, don't worry about a formal session topic. if you have a topics or issues to discuss, please post them on the sessions page. we want to make sure that the drupal cabal is ready to handle all issues. by the way, we've also posted a sample schedule. while the exact timing of sessions may change - food and intro will not. please be on time.more information on sessions
